Slot Machine Glossary

With this Slots Glossary, you’ll never be confused by the titles and descriptions of Slot Machines. The below Slot Machine terms will enable you to play slots, win progressive jackpots, claim big casino bonuses and talk like a Slots pro.

Bet One
A button found on most slot machines that bets the minimum amount.

Bet Max
A button found on most slot machines that bets the maximum amount

Bonus Game
A game which is initiated when the player lines up a certain set of symbols. These games often require the player to make a series of choices which, depending on the choice, give the player different amounts of money. These bonus games create the illusion of skill.

Candle
A light on top of the slot machine that signals the need for attention of an attendant, either to hand pay a patron, reload the machine, or fix a mechanical problem.

Carousel
A group of slot machines; usually makes a circle or oval in most casinos.

Coin
The lowest denomination bet put into the machine. Even if this bet is over 25 cents, the bet is still often called a coin.

Currency Detector
This is the part of the slot machine that detects the money that has been placed in.

Denomination
The smallest increment of bets on a slot machine.

EGM
Short for Electronic Gaming Machine. Another term for slot machine.

Fruit Machine
The term for slot machines in Great Britain.

Free Slots
Many online casinos offer free slots games where players can practice slots games and try out a casino online before wagering their own cash.

Hand Pay
When a player wins a sum that is greater than what is contained in the machine, an attendant will hand pay that player the rest of what they are owed.

Hopper
A bin at the base of a slot machine to catch the winnings of a player.

Jackpot
This is the highest payout a player can win at a slot machine. In many cases, the player must bet the maximum amount in order to win the jackpot. Some slot machines have fixed jackpots, while others have progressive jackpots that grow as more players play the slots.

Lever
In the early days of slot machines, a lever was pulled to start the reels spinning. These days, the same effect can be performed with the push of a button, but many slot machines still have a lever as well.

Near-Miss Programming
A type of programming used in some casinos to make the player feel like they almost won. For example, if the jackpot for a machine was 7-7-7, near-miss programming would have the machine display things like 7-7-Cherry or 7-7-Diamond that make the player feel like they almost got the jackpot, even though it’s just a trick of the programming. This programming is illegal in Nevada and New Jersey, and Las Vegas casinos are constantly evaluated for this brand of swindling.

One-armed Bandit
A common term for the slot machine. Refers to the ability of the machines to leave people penniless.

Payline
If identical symbols line up across a payline, the player gets a payout. In three reel machines, there is typically just one payline, but five reel machines can have as many as 25.

Pay Table
A chart typically shown at the top of the slot machine that shows how much different combinations of symbols are worth.

Poker Machine
The Australian name for slot machines.

Progressive Jackpot
In Progressive Jackpot slots, a portion of every bet goes towards a jackpot that grows continuously until someone wins it.

RNG
Stands for random number generator. The random number generator makes sure the spins of the slot are randomized.

Reels
The spinning cylinders that show a number of different symbols. However, modern video slots have caused reels to rarely be used.

Rollup
Noises and lights that accentuate a player’s win

Skill Stop
A slot machine that lets players stop reels individually, thereby letting them use skill to increase their chances of lining up a paying combination.

Video Slots

A slot machine that is entirely computerized, and uses computer programmed reels rather than real ones. The biggest online casino winners have all been playing slots and hit one of the many progressive jackpots. They walk away with millions.
