Video Poker Glossary

With this Online Video Poker Glossary, not only will you be able to understand all the Video Poker terms used when you play video poker, but you’ll be able to navigate your way through the different varieties of games to find the one you really want.

Bonus Poker
Bonus Poker is a type of Video Poker that offers higher payouts for a four of a kind. There are multiple variations that pay out more for certain card values of the four of a kind.

Credits
One credit is the smallest denomination of a bet in Video Poker. The more credits you bet, the more you get paid. In most cases you have to bet the maximum amount to win the royal flush jackpot.

Deal
This is the button on the Video Poker machine that you press to either deal a new hand or replace some of your cards.

Deuces Wild
In this video poker variant, all the twos in the deck are wild, greatly increasing the player’s odds. Because of this, the minimum paying hand is three of a kind.

Double Bonus Poker
A version of Bonus Poker, this type of game offers increased bonuses for four of a kind aces, as well as 2s, 3s and 4s.

Double Double Bonus Poker
Another version of Bonus Poker, this game offers similar bonuses for four of a kind aces, 2s, 3s, and 4s, but also rewards you a certain amount depending on what the 5th card remaining in your 4 of a kind is.

Double Up
Many Video Poker machines will offer you a double up game after you win a hand. The screen will show a card, and you will have to pick between 4 cards to find a higher card. This is an even money bet if a tie is a push, but if a tie counts as a loss, the house has a significant edge and you should never try to double up. Try to find out.

Five of a Kind
This is really only possible in games with a wild, and it is often the second highest paying hand behind a Royal Flush with no wilds.

Flush
Five Cards of the same suit

Four of a Kind
Four cards of the same rank. Exceptionally rewarded in bonus poker.

Full House
Three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank, or a three of a kind and a pair.

Hold
When you choose to keep a card in your hand rather than return it, the word “Hold” will appear across it, meaning it will stay in your hand.

Jacks or Better
The most common type of Video Poker in which there are no special rules, and the minimum paying hand is a pair of Jacks.

Joker Poker A variant in which a wild Joker is added to the deck and the player’s odds are improved. Because of this, the minimum paying hand is a pair of Kings, rather than Jacks.

Multi-Handed
Some Video Poker machines will let you play multi-handed, which means you are only dealt 5 cards to start off, but after you choose the cards to keep, the hand is dealt out multiple times. For example, if you chose to keep AA in 3-Handed multi-play, you could end up with AAAA5, AA495, and AAKK6. Three different hands with three different payouts. Of course, you have to bet on each hand.

No Wild
This is a classification given to hands in a game with wilds. Hands that don’t use any wilds are often worth more.

Pair
Two cards of the same rank.

Pay Table
The amount of money paid for each hand. Usually shown at the top of the machine.

Rank
The cards value. For example, the Jack of Spades and the Jack of Hearts share the rank of Jack.

Royal Flush
An ace, king, queen, jack and ten of the same suit.

Royal Flush Jackpot
A jackpot won when a player hits a royal flush with the maximum bet.
